Our research has focused on the preparation and characterization of nanoscale shape-memory alloys (SMAs). Macroscopic samples of SMAs are so-called smart materials: They respond to stimuli, such as changes in temperature and pressure, in predictable ways that allow them to be used as sensors and actuators. Nano-scale SMAs hold promise for creating durable components for a broad range of nanotechnologies. Synthetic procedures have been developed to customize the properties of materials that can potentially serve as nano-scale SMAs, and scanning probe methods have been used to characterize the mechanical properties of SMAs on the nano-scale. We have also developed a suite of instructional materials that brings cutting-edge research in nanotechnology into the science and engineering curricula and makes it accessible to the public. Since joining UCSD as vice chancellor for research in 2006, Ellis has been working with the campus to enhance its outstanding research enterprise. Representative responsibilities include strengthening core research facilities, facilitating multi-disciplinary research, expanding and raising the visibility of undergraduate research, promoting international collaborations, and developing research management tools.
