Spring 2024

CHEM 186/286

We will introduce basic concepts of classical (as opposed to quantum mechanical) modeling of molecular systems, including but not limited to molecular coordinate systems, potential energy functions (also known as force fields), energy minimization and conformational search, implicit and explicit solvation models, molecular dynamics simulations, docking of drug-like molecules into protein binding sites, and, time permitting, Monte Carlo simulations. The laboratory component is designed to show how these concepts play out in molecular modeling software and sample applications.
